Doctors with Africa CUAMM is the first health-focused NGO officially recognized by Italy and the largest Italian organization working to improve the health conditions of sub-Saharan African populations. Founded in 1950 with the aim of training doctors to work in developing countries, CUAMM is currently working in Angola, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda implementing long-term healthcare projects in partnership with local governments and institutions.

PROJECT TITLE: Establishment and scaling up of comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care in Cueibet County Hospital

JOB LOCATION: South Sudan, Cueibet Hospital

START DATE: November 2014

DURATION: 12 months

REQUIREMENTS

  • University Degree in Medicine and Surgery with further specialisation in Surgery
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Long-lasting experience in general surgery and obstetric surgery
  • Previous experience in Developing Countries

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The project aims at guaranteeing quality hospital services - in particular EmONC services – and at supporting the integration of hospital within the local health system

KEY DUTIES
The surgeon will be responsible of Maternity and Surgery wards.
The specific tasks will be:

  • manage and supervise wards’ staff, collaborating with the hospital management
  • collaborate with the PM and the hospital management to guarantee the availability of drugs and equipment according to needs
  • support the Continuing Medical Education by training on the job of wards’ personnel and teaching within courses and workshops
  • collaborate to the process of continuous improvement of quality and to the strengthening of health information system
  • support the process of protocols standardisation and the improvement of functional organization of the hospital
  • collaborate to the start up of ambulance service and referral system
  • support the PM and the hospital management in implementing an audit system for maternal deths and near miss, at hospital and community level
  • participate to health education activities and training of TBAs and other initiatives aiming to increase the access to maternal and reproductive health services

Selection interviews will take place at Cuamm HQ in Italy (Padua) or at Country offices in Angola, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Travel expenses are paid by the candidate.
