Somalia: DDG - Intern – Reporting and Communications

Background

Danish Deming Group (DDG) is a department under Danish Refugee Council (DRC). Danish Demining Group’s (DDG) mandate is to recreate a safe environment where people are free from the threat of landmines, explosive remnants of war and small arms and light weapons. DDG has operated in Somaliland since 1999 and in South Central Somalia since 2007 clearing mines and other explosive remnants of war. The organisation now implements an armed violence reduction (AVR) programme which includes the following types of activities: participatory community and district-level safety projects, community driven development, conflict prevention and management, community-police relationship building, mine risk education, explosive ordnance disposal, firearms safety education, physical security and stockpile management of firearms, and support to the review of policy and legislation on small arms and light weapons.

Purpose

The Reporting and Communications Intern will assist DDG Somalia programme staff and senior management in documenting, storing and disseminating information related to programme activities in order that DDG can effectively communicate with key stakeholders.

Responsibilities and Tasks

To achieve the position’s objectives the intern will perform the following tasks and undertake the following responsibilities:

Communications

  • Assist in documenting DDG’s fieldwork through note-taking, photographs, video and audio records
  • Prepare a variety of communications materials related to DDG’s programme including short briefings, online content and promotional literature
  • Edit programme documents to internationally-recognised standard of English
  • Undertake field visits to gather the information and results related to the program
  • Capture (through written, audio and visual methods) programmatic issues, events and developments of DDG’s work in Somalia.
  • Develop visibility material such as leaflets, success stories, photographs, video clips
  • Ensure that communication documents/materials are archived appropriately in an easily retrievable electronic based filing system, including the DDG and DRC websites

Reporting

  • With input from the Area Managers, the Grants Manager and the ME&L Manager, help produce high quality program progress reports as per donor and DDG requirements and deadlines
  • Cross check data with other program staff to ensure that reporting generated accurately reflects program activities

Other

  • Support program staff in organizing and managing seminars, workshops, and donor field visits as required.
  • Other duties as needed

Specification

Essential:

  • Master's degree in relevant subjects e.g. development studies, political science, international relations, mass communications, journalism, social sciences or related areas.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and speaking skills in English.
  • S/he must be well versed in office software, MS Word, Excel, the latest presentation packages including PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player

  • Photographic and other audio-visual skills
  • Work style: well planned and organized and has a capacity for initiative and decision making with competent analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work and handle spartan living conditions.Please note that this role has no staff management responsibility.

Conditions

Duty station: Hargeisa, Somaliland, with some travel to low-mid level security level sites in Somalia. This is a ‘non-family duty station’ and the person must be prepared to live and work in an isolated and unstable security environment with limited recreational and social facilities. Accommodation is provided.

Contract: 6 months - with good possibilities for extension. Background:

Social Impact (SI) is a Washington, DC-area international development management consulting firm. We provide a full range of innovative program evaluation, management consulting, technical assistance, and training services to strengthen international development programs, organizations and policies. Our global services are in the areas of democracy and governance, health and education, agriculture, the environment, and economic growth.

Objective:

The proposed two-year M&E services contract is to assist DFID to design and implement a monitoring, reporting, and evaluation strategy and provide M&E technical assistance for the Livelihoods and Food Security Program (LFSP). The overall aim of the four year, £45 million program is to improve the food and nutrition security of smallholders in the following eight districts: Mutare, Makoni, Mutasa, Shurugwi, Guruve, Mt Darwin, Gokwe South and Kwekwe.

SI is seeking a full-time Team Leader to oversee and guide all project activities, provide supervision to the design and implementation of evaluations and monitoring assignments, and serve as the primary liaison to the DFID office.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Develop the work plan and budget, coordinate activities, arrange and lead periodic meetings, consolidate individual input from team members, and coordinate the process of assembling the final findings and recommendations into high-quality document;
  • Write the final report in concert with the Senior M&E Specialist;
  • Lead the preparation and presentation of the key evaluation findings and recommendations to the DFID/Zimbabwe team and other stakeholders;
  • Provide overall leadership for the team and be the principal liaison with DFID;
  • Oversee implementation of a robust baseline for the LFSP program;
  • Lead the design and implementation of a monitoring system for gathering data and information to assess implementation progress;
  • Consolidate quarterly and annual program reports;
  • Provide necessary feedback to the lead management organizations (MO);
  • Track progress against target results as set out in the Business Case, parent log frame and project proposals;
  • Inform DFID-led annual reviews by required reports and monitoring information;
  • Oversee the Senior M&E Specialist in carrying out thematic and formative evaluations e.g. cross cutting issues such as gender, power relations and innovative approaches within the program;
  • Oversee the Senior M&E Specialist in implementing a program impact mid-term review and impact final evaluation, and;
  • Consider a follow-up evaluation around two years after the program has ended to ascertain the sustainability of the program.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Master’s Degree in development studies, political science, law, international relations, monitoring and evaluation, or related field;
  • Ten years of professional experience of designing, implementing, monitoring and analyzing qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation;
  • Demonstrated ability to employ a range of different and innovative methodologies in complex, multi-component development programs;
  • Experience of evaluating rural development programs;
  • Experience of working in Southern Africa and Zimbabwe is desirable;
  • Extensive international experience;
  • Demonstrated socio-economic and strategic analysis skills;
  • Excellent written communication skills, especially drafting evaluations, assessments, and reports;
  • Prior experience on DFID activities or DFID evaluations strongly preferred.

Purpose of the position:

To provide technical support for AIMHealth Project reporting and documentation development, data collection & analysis, Monitoring & Evaluation, research, reporting, and project visibility aligned to the Results Based M&E framework as well as support to the program teams on program development

Key responsibilities

• Develop/ rollout and manage AIM Health Project M&E database aligned to the Results Bases M&E Framework.
• Provide technical support to national office and field program staff and partners on integration of the strategy standard indicators into ongoing or new programs/projects and during program development, research and needs assessments
• Develop/adapt and coordinate administration of monitoring tools to track project performance based on the results based monitoring and evaluation framework
• Compile progress and annual program reports for management purposes in line with the detail strategy implementation plan and Donor Guidelines.
• Train and build M&E capacity of project and program staff, beneficiaries and other stakeholders according to World Vision Uganda Strategy, DME framework and Donor Guidelines.
• Plan for and implement project planning and review meetings in line with the project detailed implementation plan/National Annual Operating Plan
• Build and foster relationships with Government of Uganda counterparts, non-governmental organizations, academic and research institution, and work with them to advance M&E methodology, in close coordination with the Project Manager
• Document best practices and success stories of AIMH Project

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required

• Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences, Social Works and Social Administration, Development Studies or related development disciplines Or Statistics, Quantitative economics and related disciplines. Master’s degree is an added advantage.
• At least 5 years relevant experience with international organizations in research, monitoring and evaluation of, and reporting on complex (development) programs.
• Knowledge of and experience with a range of M&E tools and techniques, including ability to develop strategic plans and comprehensive effective systems for data collection, analysis and dissemination.
• Excellent command of MS Excel, and working knowledge of at least two statistical data management packages/softwares (quantitative & qualitative) e.g., SPSS, Nvivo/Nudist, Epi Info, STATA
• Ability to work with inter-disciplinary teams and a wide range of program/project activities.
• Strong writing and communication skills

ACTED a démarré ses interventions humanitaires en République centrafricaine en décembre 2007 avec un premier projet de réhabilitation de routes pour désenclaver les zones isolées. Alors que la stabilisation se poursuit dans le Nord-Ouest de la RCA, le Sud-Est a vu sa situation humanitaire se dégrader, à cause notamment d’incursions des forces de la LRA, avec une croissance exponentielle du nombre de déplacés et de réfugiés. Depuis 2008 et la signature des accords de paix, ACTED est engagée dans le soutien au relèvement rapide du pays. ACTED se concentre principalement sur la redynamisation économique, la réhabilitation de routes visant à faciliter l’accès humanitaire et les réponses rapides aux mouvements de population. Aujourd’hui, ACTED assure le lien entre l’urgence, la réhabilitation et le développement, avec des interventions au Nord-Ouest et au Sud-Est du pays, et avec une nouvelle zone d’intervention au Sud-Ouest.En 2011, ACTED assurera le lien entre l’urgence, la réhabilitation et le développement, l’ONG maintenant ses interventions au Nord-Ouest et au Sud-Est du pays, et ouvrant une nouvelle zone d’intervention au Sud-Ouest. Le Stagiaire Reporting s’assure de la production régulière de rapports pour son Responsable Reporting ainsi que pour le Directeur Pays. Il assiste le Responsable Reporting tout autant que le Directeur Pays dans le développement d’une stratégie de communication pays, au niveau interne et externe.

Sous la supervision du Reporting Manager, le Stagiaire Reporting aura la charge de: - Collecter et synthétiser les données venant du terrain, et rédiger des rapports avec le soutien des départements finance, programme, monitoring et évaluation ou d’autres départements de coordination.- Assister le Reporting Manager dans la rédaction de propositions de projetsFaire le lien avec les partenaires externes et représenter ACTED dans les réunions de coordination et d’information avec d’autres ONG, les bailleurs, et autres acteurs humanitaires
