The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking for a Junior Professional Officer to fill the position of Nutritionist with our Nutrition Unit in Juba, South Sudan.

Brief description of Nutrition Programme in South Sudan

South Sudan is confronted with high burden of undernutrition with estimated one third of children 6 to 59 months old wasted. Other challenges include high disease burden, depleting food security situation as well as suboptimal leaving conditions for most rural communities. In support of the Government of South Sudan to address these challenges, WFP collaborates with both local and international NGOs as well as UN agencies to implement nutrition support interventions to affected communities under two projects, PRRO and EMOP. The interventions include blanket supplementary feeding and targeted supplementary feeding for prevention/reduction and treatment of acute malnutrition respectively. In addition, WFP provides nutrition support to people on HIV/AIDS, TB and Kala-zar treatment programmes. WFP also provides technical support to Government on health and nutrition related issues.

Recently WFP and UNICEF put together the “nutrition scale up plan” with the aim of addressing the increasing health and nutrition needs in South Sudan. The scale up plan includes increasing the level of staff to support its implementationGeneral Information

Duties and responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of Head of Nutrition Unit, in collaboration with the Emergency Unit the JPO will perform the following responsibilities:

• Provide orientation on the scale up plan to Emergency Mobile Teams• Ensure easy access of nutrition materials (posters/leaflets, forms, MUAC tapes, sticks) by the mobile team• Consolidate nutrition reports from the mobile teams and disseminate to all relevant offices• Participate and contribute in the joint UNICEF/WFP weekly RRM meetings• Ensure that all partners and WFP sub-offices understand and implement the scale up plan as per the strategy• Document lessons learnt on implementation of the scale up plan and disseminate the report• Provide technical support and guidance to improve the scale up plan implementation strategy• Participate in nutrition related coordination forums, working groups, technical meetings and training activities • Perform any other duties Qualifications and experience

• Advanced University degree or University degree with experience and training/courses in one or more of the following disciplines: Nutrition, Public Health, Dietetics; • 3 years post graduate, progressively responsible, job related experience in Public Nutrition, including emergency nutrition;• Proficiency in Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel, Power-point, and Outlook) and nutrition related statistical analysis packages such as ENA for SMART and EPINut;• Competencies: Cognitive Capacity, Teamwork, Action Management, Innovation, Partnering, Client Orientation.

Working Languages

Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) and intermediate knowledge (intermediate/level B) of another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages).

Supervision

The supervisor will guide the development of a work plan by the JPO, identifying individual goals to achieve as well as learning opportunities. The JPO will on a regular basis report to the supervisor on ongoing activities, challenges and new emerging opportunities. The Supervisor will provide performance feedback in line with WFP’s corporate performance appraisal system.

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a Nutritionist with skills in behavioral change to support CIP’s orange-fleshed sweetpotato work in a regional project.

The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international agricultural research-for-development organization with a focus on potato, sweetpotato, and Andean roots and tubers. Its vision is of roots and tubers improving the lives of the poor. CIP is dedicated to achieving food security, improved well-being, and gender equity for poor people in root and tuber farming and food systems of the developing world. CIP works with partners to contribute high quality science, technology, and capacity strengthening for sustainable science-based solutions. CIP is headquartered in Lima, Peru, with staff and activities in over 30 locations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. CIP is a member of the CGIAR Consortium. Its science is carried out by the 15 research centers who are members of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations. The Position: The nutritionist will be based in Kigali, Rwanda with extensive travel within Rwanda and occasional travel to Mozambique, Malawi, and Kenya. The specialist will report to the Project Leader for the Going-to-Scale Intervention using orange-fleshed sweetpotato as an entry point in an integrated agriculture-nutrition-marketing project. The principal tasks and responsibilities will include, but not limited to the following:

Duties and responsibilities:

• Design and implement formative research with local partners in each country to understand current dietary practices and identify key entry points for successfully changing behaviors concerning dietary practices.• Design, analyze, and write up nutrition-related components for structured surveys.• Engage with country teams and partners to develop cost-effective nutrition interventions that can be taken to scale at the community level, especially those utilizing orange-fleshed sweetpotato as a key component for combatting vitamin A deficiency.• Participate with monitoring and evaluation teams in assessing the performance of nutrition interventions and backstopping teams in any necessary adjustments.• Work with media and marketing teams and the private sector to develop appropriate nutrition messages with accurate nutrition information.• Participate in the design of appropriate job tools for those engaged at the community level and those engaged in influencing consumers in urban markets.• Participate as a trainer in annual learning-by-doing trainer of trainers’ courses.• Engage with policy makers at different fora to advocate for food-based interventions.

Selection Criteria:

• PhD degree in Nutrition or Public Health with at least 2 years of experience in community-level nutrition programs or Master’s Degree in Nutrition with at least 5 years’ experience in community level nutrition or other health programs with efforts to change behaviors.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Working knowledge of French required.• Good publishing record.• Familiarity with working on food-based interventions a plus.• Aptitude for teamwork, leadership, training, and communications skills.• Willingness to travel extensively within the country and the region.

Conditions: The employment contract will be for a three-year term (with a three month probation period) with the possibility of renewal, subject to availability of funding. Job Purpose: Working as member of a large, innovative multi-sectorial programme, the Nutritionist will:

• Serve as the technical reference person supporting the mission to better apply nutrition standards and best practices at field level (including support to operations research and M&E processes)

• Contribute to efforts to enact measurable change at health district level and contribute at the national level to the promotion of Concern best practices and approaches to address under nutrition

The normal duties and responsibilities attached to the role are as follows:

Main duties & Responsibilities:

Technical support

? Work with the Health and Nutrition Coordinator and Nutrition Program manager to ensure effective programme implementation in accordance with international/national protocols and best practice for CTC and wider nutrition interventions and ensure monitoring of all nutrition activities (field visits, regular programme monitoring, mid-term and final evaluations, etc.)

? In coordination with the Health and Nutrition Coordinator, support capacity development of actors at the community, health centre, and district health team level to technically improve implementation of services and programs to prevent and treat malnutrition

? Provide technical support and supervision to nurse-supervisors, CMAM supervisors, field agents and volunteers during monitoring visits to program sites and initial and refresher training for the improvement of community mobilisation and screening activities, and the quality of care for CRENI, CRENAS and CRENAM beneficiaries.

? Provide technical support and supervision during weekly and monthly Nutrition Programme meetings.

? Train and mentor Concern and MoH staff in nutrition, CTC, including community mobilisation, nutrition surveys and other technical subjects, as required

? Contribute to the development of programme strategies, proposals and concept notes to donors in collaboration with the Health Advisor and ACD-P.

? Support and orient consultants undertaking technical support for studies, surveys and evaluations.

Monitoring and evaluation

? Advise and provide technical support to M & E team and Health/Nutrition staff for an efficient monitoring and evaluation system to ensure programme quality and effective integration of CTC, including analysis of epidemiological data to inform programme adjustment and strategic orientation

Review the quality of monthly nutrition data for the production of regular donor reports (Sitrep, Monthly Nutrition Situation Report on CRENAM, CRENAS, and CRENI admissions, analysis of CSI performance vs SPHERE standards, screening results, Concern quarterly CMAM report, UNICEF CMAM report, WFP summary Food Distribution, nutrition and screening report).

? Ensure programme quality adheres to Concern and other internationally accepted standards such as SPHERE and HAP.

Surveys

? In conjunction with the Health advisor, ACDP, Health and Nut program coordinator and Nutrition team, support the team in preparing for and conducting Standard Monitoring & Assessment of Relief & Transitions (SMART), nutrition program coverage and other surveys, including analysis and report writing.

? Integrate information and results from above surveys into programme planning.

Reporting

? Guide the Nutrition program manager and team to monitor and document the performance of the nutrition activities through quality monthly, quarterly , mid-term and final reports

? Ensure that lessons learned are captured and properly documented and archived by carrying out regular nutrition component reviews.

? Ensure high quality and timely reports developed for donors.

? Ensure all programme staff/partners are fully oriented in Concern’s Programme Participant Protection Policy, Sphere and HAP principles.

Representation/Coordination

? Work closely with the key regional, departmental and district government departments particularly the hospital, health district and nutrition focal points to ensure the respect of the minimum standards of quality, integration and expansion of the treatment of acute malnutrition.

? Liaise with regional intervening partners (MSF-E, World Vision, MDM, ACH, etc.) and build strong relationships with the regional technical line departments, regional WFP, UNICEF and OCHA reps.

? Ensure that field level issues, concerns, and results are communicated to the Health Advisor and ACDP on a timely basis for sharing and informing discussions during representation at Nutrition Technical Group , Health, Food Security and other national level meetings
