BACKGROUND

UN-Habitat’s Urban Planning and Design Branch (UPDB) focuses on spatial planning at the city-region, landscape and city-wide scales and design at the intra-city scale. It also addresses issues related to cities and climate change, cities and biodiversity, the urban green economy and urban and peri-urban agriculture and forestry. The Branch targets its policy advice, guidelines and technical support to fast-growing cities in transitional, developing and least-developed countries. Its work builds on the well-tested Environmental Planning and Management process, which has equipped cities and their wide ranges of actors to deal with the challenges of sprawl, congestion, exclusion, climate change, resource limits, habitat degradation and food insecurity.

During the consultancy period, UPDB will be publishing several reports from an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) that will need to be laid out and e-published. The Cities and Climate Change Initiative (CCCI) will produce newsletters and a policy note series, as well as update its city and country outreach literature. UPDB has a portfolio of outreach events which provides a prime platform to showcase its work, network with existing and potential partners and disseminate the experiences, lessons and tools that the Branch has published. The timeline and audience of these events should inform the overarching objectives of this consultancy.

In 2014-2015 several of the Urban Planning Branch activities require packaging and dissemination of this information will be acute and urgent in preparation for Habitat III Prep Com II and the Governing Council as well as for setting the basis for the organization’s Strategic Plan 2014-2019 implementation.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The consultant will work under the supervision of the Coordinator, Urban Planning and Design Branch (UPDB), and the Unit Leaders, and perform all or part of the following activity sequence as required for the delivery of the consultancy deliverables (following section):

  • Coordinate submission of final document drafts
  • Coordinate text editing and translation (as required)
  • Provide first review of text revisions
  • Obtain text sign-off from author(s) and UPDB supervisors
  • Coordinate image procurement, including obtaining copyrights, credits and captions
  • Coordinate layout and design by in-house designers
  • Provide quality control related to graphic principles (e.g. grid use and consistent typesetting) and use of UN-Habitat branding guidelines
  • Present final layout to UPDB supervisors, facilitate any requested changes/corrections
  • Initiate and oversee administrative process for printing
  • Coordinate work of in-house print shop including material specifications, colouration, quantity and schedule
  • Obtain sign-off on final proof from UPDB supervisors
  • Coordinate delivery of publication to targeted partners/events

DELIVERABLES

  • Finalisation of Public Space Toolkit. - 3 weeks
  • Reviewing Best practices database - 3 weeks

EDUCATION

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in urban or environmental studies; post graduate degree preferred.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum five years’ related work experience.
  • Ability to work in complex situations and show initiative under limited supervision while still informing the UPDB Chief and Publications Focal Point of critical decision points.

  • Experience writing publications and toolkits on urban planning in collaboration with UN-Habitat (preferable but not mandatory).

  • Experience reviewing and revising books/publications on urban planning related issues.

  • Previous work experience in the Urban Planning and Design Branch, UN-Habitat is an advantage (not mandatory).

  • Prior experience with the United Nations publication procedures is a strong asset.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Excellent English writing skills are indispensable. For this consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is required. Although not a requirement, knowledge of Spanish and French will be an advantage.

OTHER SKILLS

Technical capabilities

  • Familiar with good graphic design principles (e.g. establishing and using a grid, consistent typesetting, and clear presentation of data) as well as text processing and spread sheets.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software is an asset

Personal qualities

  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary team.
  • Consultative and empowering working style and willingness to learn from others.

REMUNERATION
Payments will be based on deliverables over the consultancy period. The total amount of USD 9,450 is to be paid in two tranches of USD 4,725 for a total of 1.5 months over 4 months.
